plateau by bike
To breathe the aridity and feel the uplifted layers, I'm circumnavigating the Colorado Plateau by bike. Pedaling across this high desert will let me experience the place on a human scale--both spatially and temporally. Bikes are tools of resistance.
I planned my route around the region's key towns, frontline communities, and threatened landscapes. I will start in eastern Utah, venture through Dinétah, stop in towns such as Moab, Durango, and Flagstaff, and finish in the Grand Staircase region of southwestern Utah. Along the way I will visit sites of extreme extraction--from the tar sands mine in Utah to the Navajo Generating Station.
